Transgender celebrity Crystal Love Johnson says she is ready to return to the stage after a long battle with diabetes that has included having one of her legs amputated below the knee.
One of the Tiwi Islands' sistergirls, Crystal has met Princess Diana and Mother Teresa, featured in documentaries, performed around Australia, danced in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics and travelled the world raising awareness of issues such as HIV and AIDS. Crystal's carer Selby Wilson and physiotherapist Paul Gerken have played major roles in Crystal's recovery.
The Minister for Health wasn't available for an interview, but she provided a statement saying the Royal Darwin Hospital Foot Clinic partners with health providers in the community to expand podiatry services and prevent amputation. Louise Maple-Brown from the Menzies School of Health Research says recent statistics show one in three remote Aboriginal adults in the Territory has diabetes. This is at least five times higher than national rates in adults.
