Tyler was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2018 during an annual checkup. “I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is prostate-specific antigen,” Tyler explained. Advanced prostate cancer was detected, and had spread to his bones. “I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years,” he said. “It’s stage IV [now], late stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.
The actor, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, says that his cancer spread to his spine, leading to paralysis of his lower body. That’s why his appearance on the recentreunion happened over Zoom, which was “bittersweet” for Tyler. “I was very happy to be included,” he said.
Now Tyler said he’s turning his focus to advocating for early prostate cancer screenings. “There are other options available to men if they catch it before me,” Tyler explained. “Next time you go in for just a basic exam or your yearly checkup, please ask your doctor for a PSA test. It’s easily detectable.”
Tyler told Melvin that his prognosis has made him value each day. “It’s made me, personally, just realize how important every moment is, every day," he said. “And fighting. Don’t give up. Keep fighting. Keep yourself as light as possible.”
Thank you for sharing this important story that will encourage men to get screened for prostate cancer early and help save lives!
How very sad x
