The artist has paraded the paint-splattered jumpsuit and green bra she wore while painting the Archibald Prize-winning self portrait Diana from Erskineville today at the Archibald Prize announcement. Sharpe, one of only 10 women to win the famously controversial prize, says she found it where she had left it decades before in a bag in a drawer in her studio.
“Almost nothing gets public attention in visual arts except the Archibald, which is why artists go into it, and I think I got more than most because it was the novelty of a young women winning it,” Sharpe said. “Of course I will pick my friend Dagmar Cyrulla’s portrait of me!” Sharpe said. “Dagmar lives in Melbourne. She came up to visit me in my Sydney studio warehouse... We talked, drank coffee, ate cake and she made drawings of me.
