And holding together a seven-part crime drama elevates it to her finest performance. Much of the emotional impact of the series comes from looks and silences. But Winslet makes Mare grittily authentic with a worn-down physicality, a convincing Philli accent, attention to small character details and way she seamlessly fits into a well-drawn small town community going through dark times.
