Exclusive: The Enmore Theatre may become the first beneficiary of new laws that aim to strike a more equitable balance between protecting residents from excessive noise and protecting venues from vexatious noise complaints | LindaMorrissmh

Enmore Theatre could become the first venue in Sydney to benefit from new laws intended to promote live music over poker machines and make it harder to shut down venues over noise complaints.

The Enmore Theatre is likely to be the first to benefit from new regulations that streamline noise complaints.Under the package of 63 amendments, restrictions have been removed from mirror-balls, dancing, artist numbers and music genres. It will also be easier to change a shop or retail premises into a small arts or music venue.

In the inner west, mayor Darcy Byrne is keen to extend the dispensations and incentives for the Enmore to the Bridge Hotel in Balmain and performance venues along the main streets of Newtown, Marrickville and Leichhardt. Inner West Council, which is making a play to become the performance capital of NSW, will consider removing restrictive conditions from venues’ development approvals.

The once-thriving thoroughfares of Norton Street in Leichhardt and Darling Street in Balmain were now in decline and could benefit from a shot in the arm, he said. Greens councillor Colin Hesse had yet to see the detail of the mayor’s motion but said noise had never been a problem at the Enmore because it was a well-run venue.

LindaMorrissmh About time! Venues and music culture has been constantly suppressed by noise complaints from a small group of people who just hate anything fun! There are many places to live in Sydney. No sympathy for noise complainers, especially in the CBD and surrounding inner city.

LindaMorrissmh Just buy these people some good quality noise cancelling headphones and the problem will disappear.

LindaMorrissmh This reminds me of the Old Manly Boatshed, a basement live music venue in Manly. Been there for 35 years - commercial above it on street level and a couple of floors of apartments above that. Yet people buy into the apartments knowing there's a live music venue & then complain.🙄

LindaMorrissmh This is a family owned venue , supporting 5 families. It’s the best in Sydney and this strip is really ‘commercial’. Please allow this wonderful venue to continue without the hassles. We need these great smaller venues that supports the community you are the best
