DUBAI—While most art expositions disappeared or migrated online during the pandemic, Art Dubai, the largest art fair in the Middle East, took the plunge this week and allowed thousands of art collectors and dealers to their tents despite fears over spread of the coronavirus.outside of the virtual realm during the pandemic

, said it drew 7,800 visitors compared with 12,000 in 2019 and generated sales of more than $3 million in the first three days, in line with pre-pandemic figures. The organizers are capitalizing on Dubai’s high rate of vaccinations—second only to Israel—and its position as a haven for high-net-worth visitors sheltering from the pandemic.

“We had to make many changes to the fair to make it safe, but Dubai is one of the few places in the word that accepts and embraces new formats and ways of thinking,” said Art Dubai’s co-founder and chief executive Benedict Floyd. “I was surprised to sell out of tickets so early on and I think it just reinforces what we all know is that the screen cannot replace real-life experience.”

Fifty galleries from 31 countries are participating in the fair’s 14th edition, which opened its doors Monday and ends Saturday. International galleries unable to attend in person because of travel restrictions were able take advantage of the fair’s remote participation program, by sending their works for display on site and connecting virtually with visitors at the fair.
