Mission: Impossible - FalloutOne big question heading into 2020 before the world went into lockdown was whether China’s moviegoers would continue to prefer Marvel/DC superhero movies and a few select franchises but would otherwise be satisfied by their own local tentpoles. We still don’t know, but disappointing grosses over the last year for’s halfway decent reissue is another example of Chinese moviegoers preferring recent Hollywood blockbusters to new stuff.
The majority of big movies that broke out in China were movies that were already successful everywhere else as well. With China taking as much as 75% of the ticket price for various Hollywood biggies, the only effect was to artificially inflate the global grosses of already successful global hits and periodically provide false hope to a dead franchise.
