When media subject certain personalities to rigorous fact\u002Dchecking, but extend a credulous courtesy to the Sussexes, it is a clear double standard.

Oprah made a pitch for credibility at the outset, clarifying that the Sussexes had not been paid for the interview. But the question was backwards. Harry and Meghan gave the interview without compensation to Oprah’s production company Harpo. Harpo sold the rights to CBS for US$7 million.

The Duke, who has publicly presented himself as a model for mental health advocacy, was never asked why he simply didn’t pick up the phone and have a counsellor, therapist or psychiatrist make a house call. Royals do that rather routinely for medical matters. Harry’s late mother once flew by helicopter to Derbyshire, near Chesterfield, to visit a psychic, astonishing the local villagers as she landed in the back garden of Rita Rogers.

Indeed, in the past week all of the serious claims made in the Sussex interview have been examined in these pages. But Oprah and CBS? They did not offer their viewers that service. That failure was more widespread. Much of the major media coverage of the interview presented as true what was said with no significant critical examination.Article content

CBS knew that something was awry with the interview from a news perspective. Indeed, it did not run as part of CBS News, but was pointedly aired by CBS Entertainment. The line between news and entertainment — especially on the cable networks — has become blurred, to the detriment of the news divisions. More viewers but less credibility.
