More than 40 years ago, I met Roald Dahl when he spoke at the Cambridge Union. I can’t recall the topic of his address but he left the impression of being distinctly weird, to the point of being mildly sinister. After that brief exposure, my subsequent discovery that his children’s books are laced with darkness came not remotely as a surprise.
