The Northern Territory Government forges ahead with plans to open a new art gallery in 2023, despite recent cuts to staff and exhibitions at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT.

A $50 million art gallery is edging closer to becoming a reality in Darwin, but doubts are being raised about whether theThe NT Government says it will soon release a tender for the construction of the State Square Gallery

"A tender for the construction of the gallery is expected to be awarded in mid-2021 with anticipated completion of construction in late 2022," an NT Government spokeswoman said. The NT Government, MAGNT's main source of funding, cut the institution's budget by 11 per cent over two years in 2019. The institution's latest annual report reveals a deficit of more than $500,000 and nearly $1 million slashed from grant funding against the previous financial year.
