Becky Hammon made history on Thursday, December 31, Manila time, after she took over the reins as the first female NBA head coach following Gregg Popovich’s ejection against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
"Obviously, it's a big deal," Hammon told ESPN after the game."It's a substantial moment. I've been a part of this organization, I got traded here in 2007, so I've been in San Antonio and part of the Spurs and sports organization with the Stars, and everything for 13 years." Hammon was hired as an assistant in 2014 after taking up coaching the year prior due to an ACL tear that sidelined her from active WNBA competition.
In a 2019 article in The Player's Tribune, two-time champion big man Pau Gasol, who played for the Spurs from 2016 to 2019, sang high praises for Hammon’s coaching prowess.
