Music classes involving singing and the playing of brass and woodwind instruments have been banned in all Victorian schools in term four, prompting an outcry from teachers who say the decision could lead more students to quit music lessons.
Healesville High School music teacher Amanda Morrison says her students were distraught at news of the ban."We have been giving lessons via remote learning, teaching from our homes," she said. "That can’t continue because students will actually be on site, so they can’t do online lessons at school because they still can’t play their instruments like they’ve been able to at home.
"As educators, we agree that the mental health and wellbeing of students is paramount and know that participation in music provides many students with a place of connectedness and safety," the letter by association president Elizabeth Furman said. The directive applies outside of metropolitan Melbourne, even though regional Victoria is a step ahead on the road map to reopening.
