.CarlaBruni talks creating music in quarantine, inspiring the next generation of models, and why she’s an eternal optimist.

. Though she’s been writing songs and recording for the better part of two decades, Bruni’s latest record is the first of her six albums to be named after herself. Though it sticks to the soulful sound she's known for, centers on the personal. For Bruni, her sixth release’s soulful material serves as a re-introduction, taking listeners into her world via candid lyrics and meaningful collaborations.

Each part of Bruni’s creative process is dedicatedly thoughtful. An artist who takes her time while creating—she writes each song by hand in special notebooks—Bruni values the slow burn. “I use pen and paper like it’s the Middle Ages!” she says. “When you’re on a computer, every change goes away; you don’t get to see all the forms of a song and its evolution, you’re only looking at the final lyrics. On paper, you can keep everything.

To that end, Bruni looked to the things that bring her joy, adding in a cover version of Spanish singer Jeanette’s 1974 hit, “Porque te vas” because it reminded her of childhood. “It means ‘why are you going away’” she explains. “It’s a song I just loved, and that’s the criteria when you choose a cover, pick a song you like to sing!” Her sister, actress Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, also has a cameo on the album in a particularly charming moment.

Though she admires the outré style of chameleons like Lady Gaga and Héloïse Letissier of Christine and the Queens, Bruni describes her look as “simple,” gravitating towards clothes that don’t overshadow her songs. “I like to dress in a classic way that doesn’t interfere with the music,” she says. “What I’m always trying to find is something flattering. Coming from modeling, what I’m most comfortable with are [clothes] that work with the body so I consider the silhouettes.

Music is Bruni’s most valued form of expression, and through her songs, she hopes to send an uplifting message during a moment when it’s needed most. “I hope when people listen, they feel cuddly, and on holiday. I hope they feel warm,” she says. “Music is even more important now that we’re going through hard times, [but] I’m optimistic.”The best products, from fashion to beauty to home, curated for you by Vogue's editors.
