A goddaughter, one of many cld hv bn. As ppl do hv godchildren. So not a blood link family member but a gift during tht period of time & seen as normal wanting royal link & also helping girl. It has the more of an interesting background to warrant its story then being picked out.

MoominTheBrave She was a child slave given to queen as gift .

If this is the case then is it not proof that 'slavery' actually was a +ve in the life of this girl ? How else would she have been recognised today ? Honestly never heard this story but its stretching it to label it history ?. Rather fate had a hand when the Queen intervened.

johnsweeneyroar The only question being...where was it before now?

Kept that quiet

And?

Gorgeous girl. Now she’d have listened to this.

Really - not comment!

This is EXACTLY what we need to be doing, not rioting in the streets, pulling down statues and forcing the renaming of historical buildings. It's history, it's there and always will be. It needs to be studied and learned from. This is the right way to be inclusive and diverse.

This is the first I've heard of this. I find that fact quite annoying.

For appeasement purposes?

I believe this was in one of the episodes of 'Victoria' on ITV.

The article said she was 'presented as a 'diplomatic gift' to Captain Frederick Forbes'. Another source on the internet says she was 'a Dahomian princess' which he 'rescued...from sacrificial death'. Hopefully EnglishHeritage will fully explain the circumstances.

A beautiful portrait. Very elegant 😀

Beautiful
