Tasmania's Government had secret plans to change laws so public housing tenants could be evicted without reason after the Supreme Court ruled the state had no right to evict an intellectually disabled man from his home.
The Government chose not to appeal the decision after threats to do so, but the revelations in State Parliament suggest the Government was going to instead deal with the issue through amendments to existing legislation. Labor MP Alison Standen has repeatedly asked why the state has delivered five out of an expected 80 new public housing dwellings supposed to be built from millions of dollars in additional funds freed up by the Federal Government.
