An independent safety audit of an inner-city pop-up cycleway installed by the state government as an emergency coronavirus measure found it contained multiple risks of serious injury or death.
An audit of the pop-up cycleway on Bridge Road, Glebe, found safety risks that could result in serious injury or death.Lead auditor Zoran Bakovic, who is frequently an expert witness in crash investigations and was hired to do the safety review of the Bourke Street cycleway, found one example was where the path abruptly stopped and motorists were forced into the way of cyclists to avoid a right-turn lane.
"TfNSW [Transport for NSW] has also undertaken a road safety audit and will address any remaining issues," the spokesperson said. The independent audit was done while the cycleway was operational though not completed. At the council meeting, Independent councillor Kerryn Phelps called on the council to abandon the Bridge Road route and move the cycleway to St Johns Road, which runs parallel to Bridge Road.
AngusGthompson What about the everyday risks to pedestrians from cyclists who believe they can do whatever they want?
AngusGthompson I tell you what is intolerable..cyclist & cars sharing a road..totally incompatible and dangerous ...period . Also cyclists on a road where the car speed is above 40 k mph..as a rider I can only say there is only grave risk to the cyclist .
AngusGthompson Covid cycleway..seriously!
