Discrimination complaints at Senator set 'a worrying example for free speech' | Sky News AustraliaTasmanian Senator Claire Chandler says discrimination complaints levelled against her for advocacy on women's sport and women's sex-based rights sets a “very worrying example for free speech in Australia”.\n\nThe Tasmanian senator has been subject to a complaint under the Tasmania anti-discrimination act for her view surrounding the need for woman-only sports, and single sex toilets and change rooms. \n\nMs Chandler wrote an article in The Mercury in July where she said “you don’t have to be a bigot to recognise the differences between the male and female sexes and understand why women’s sports, single sex changerooms and toilets are import”. \n\nShe was accused of inciting hatred against transsexual people. \n\n“We have seen time and time again,” Ms Chandler told Sky news host Chris Kenny.\n\n“Australians being dragged in front of tribunals, commissions, these quasi-judicial bodies, on the basis that they have engaged in public debate, put forward their own views on the world, and instead of being able to exchange in a public debate in civilised form, they’re getting dragged along to a tribunal to answer for what they’ve said.\n\n“We’ve seen it happen with Peter Ridd, we’ve seen it happen with Archbishop Porteous in Tasmania, this is just the latest in a long line of worrying trends in this area”.\n\nMs Chandler said these tribunals and commissions were demonstrating a sentiment of wanting to “shut down debate completely and censor any views that differ from the vocal minorities”. \n\nImage: Getty\n
