but, as a survey of contemporary British youth and their prospects, it is pretty depressing. Rocks is a 15-year-old London schoolgirl who is abandoned by just about everyone. Her father is dead and her depressed mother decides to go awol, leaving her to look after her younger brother unsupervised. Her school seems more concerned with lowering pupils’ expectations than educating them. Social services can barely keep track of her, either. There seem to be no safety nets left.
I would guess it would tell us about London society. Not Scotland, not N Ireland, not Wales and probably not anything past the M25. What we need is more London centric views painted as the collective British experience.
From an underfunded social care system to a system of parenting that completely ignores children...Gives us a lot to re-evaluate. Despite the little that the kids do to get by, that shouldn't be the case. They need our nurture and attention.
God love them. They should have a chat with the remaining old folk that had their childhoods during the War.
