When the founding members of The Fast Show reunited to celebrate the cult comedy’s anniversary, there was one very sad absence.
They also give an emotional nod to another of Caroline’s characters, Renee – the woman who talks non-stop to her hen-pecked husband Roy. Before long an entire country was repeating its catchphrases, including “Suit you, sir”, “Today I have mostly been eating...”, and “I’ll get me coat”. “We think of The Fast Show as being of its time – but actually a lot of those characters and jokes still stand. It doesn’t jar.”He revealed: “Bob trawled through some of our sketches. He would be the first to slag me off, but even Bob couldn’t do it! He had to say, ‘This stands up very well, you know’. That was very nice.
But the Fast Show was slow to catch on. Paul said: “Quite a few people thought it was crap. I suppose we had a little vision and we were confident with the performers we had and the ideas we had. It did shake up the format of the sketch show at the time. It certainly felt different. It was a bit of a grower though.”
“It wasn’t our original idea, but I think Charlie and I imbued it with a sense of our own relationship.
