Prosecutors are investigating whether Donald Trump, pictured on Friday, inflated the size of his wealth to seek bank loans and other benefits – an allegation the president denies lied about his wealth to obtain larger loans than he was entitled to and avoid taxes. The New York Attorney General’s office revealed details of its ongoing probe on Monday as it sought to force Trump to release financial records its investigators can analyze.
A letter sent to New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed prosecutors are looking into ‘Statements of Financial Condition’ – document sent by Trump to his lenders detailing his assets and debts. The probe against Trump kicked off last year when his disgraced ex-fixer Michael Cohen claimed the president inflated his net worth to bag bigger loans. Trump denies Cohen’s claims, and all allegations of wrongdoing made against him.Prosectors want to subpoena – issue a legal demand – to obtain financial documentation from the president. He has repeatedly refused to release his tax returns, with the battle to share them set to head back to the US Supreme Court for a second time.
Explaining the cancelation, a spokesman for Eric Trump said: ‘We cannot allow the requested interview to go forward … pursuant to those rights afforded to every individual under the Constitution.’report that much of the detail in prosecutors’ filings was redacted, but that it includes mentions of three Trump-owned properties; a golf course in Los Angeles, an office building on Wall Street in New York City, and a country estate in Westchester county, New York, called Seven Springs.
