When Steve Bannon did his perp walk from a Manhattan courthouse on Friday, he did look like he’d just stepped off a yacht. He had a Riviera tan and the kind of silver mane only the malignantly rich seem able to cultivate – luxuriant but sleazy.
The Bannon arrest was a glorious counterpoint to the Democratic Convention, held this week to formally nominate Joe Biden as the presidential candidate. There, the speeches were about justice, structural inequality, racial struggle, personal struggle, and how the American Way has lost its way.
There are plenty of progressives and left-wingers who express disappointment that Biden was the Democratic nominee, from a field of contenders replete with women, and women of colour like Harris, who he has chosen to be his running mate. Trump’s incompetence and callous negligence has caused the deaths of countless Americans, even before you count his countless other disasters and disgraces. Yet it is a woman, particularly a black woman, who is not a “safe bet" to secure power for the Democrats.It is hard to see any other former First Lady getting top billing to endorse her husband’s political successor. But Michelle Obama absolutely killed with her impassioned speech, generating enormous amounts of positive coverage.
