Nakkiah Lui's grandmother never let her forget how fortunate they both were to be able to read. Together they scoured discount stores filling shopping trolleys with cheap books. Holidays were spent browsing library shelves. In the evenings, they would sit together in her nan's Mount Druitt public housing flat inhaling everything from old"She read everything and she always said I was really lucky that I was able to read.
New imprints are rare in Australian publishing, and they're not often led by people without prior industry experience . The publisher's last new imprint was established more than a decade ago and it focused on commercial fiction.
"If I am able to go, 'Hey, I am at a publisher, I can do this, I can create a space for you to belong and to be heard,' if I can just add another paver to the road... I want people to be like, 'If this Aboriginal girl from Mount Druitt can do this then I have something to say and I am important'. I want people to feel like they have a place."
