Eight of the best soccer clubs in Europe will duke it out in a single-elimination, made-for-television, 12-day spectacular for the Champions League title.

For all the novelty of empty stadiums, elbow bumps, and physically distanced locker rooms, European soccer’s transition into its pandemic era was remarkably smooth.

Once the hiatus was out of the way, domestic seasons finished up more or less as they would have in normal times. And even if the new precautions made the atmosphere of the most passionately followed sport on Earth quiet and weird, they didn’t fundamentally alter the competition.
