A federal judge ruled Mo'Nique’s discrimination lawsuit against Netflix can move forward. She claims Netflix offered to pay her $500,000 for a comedy special — a fraction of what her her male and white peers were offered — then blacklisted her.

Oscar-winning actress and comedian Monique Hicks' discrimination lawsuit against Netflix can move forward, according to a U.S. District Court judge. Hicks, who goes by Mo'Nique, claims the streamer discriminated against her on the basis of her race and gender when they offered to pay her $500,000 in 2018 for a comedy special, a fraction of the tens of millions of dollars Netflix paid for specials from other comedians including Amy Schumer, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.

In his decision, Judge André Birotte Jr wrote,"Mo'Nique plausibly alleges that, after she spoke out and called her initial offer discriminatory, Netflix retaliated against her by shutting down its 'standard practice of negotiating in good faith that typically results in increased monetary compensation....'". Other credits include the BET sitcom

I had no idea she was a comedian.

netflix shame on you for discriminating based on race and gender! moworldwide

She's not funny enough to warrant a big paycheck plain and simple..

A company can offer whatever it wants or not offer anything. It’s called negotiating. You win or lose. She wasn’t a potential employee looking to be hired. The case should be dismissed.

She has been persecuted and blackballed on suspicious rumors by white and black power brokers. Fight back!

They Negotiated better than her.

Lord!! ⚪️ people on this thread 🤦‍♀️

Who is she?

Work your way up

I saw Mo'Nique in Vegas last year and she was absolutely hysterical. A friend had tickets and I’m so glad I went.

The fact that people can find fault in a Black woman advocating for herself because they deem her irrelevant, is exactly why she’s doing this. This woman has a 30 yr career. Equality truly makes so many of you uncomfortable. respecther

Umm. Can we stop using the word 'blacklisted'? Thanks

Good. Get them. Greedy a$$hats.

She is not funny.

Do Netflix have some kind of formula on what they initially offer the talent? Down to production costs over anticipated revenue etc? If they have something like this and it wasn't used they are in trouble, if they do and she was aware of this - this isn't going to look good!

Who?

Hard pressed case but y'all keep trying..

Ps. It's called capitalism. No one seemed to be clamoring for the special nor care if she made it.

Who?

Sorry moniqur ur funny but not that funny/popular

Who is on the netflix board? Didnt they hire barack and michael obama? Why is there discrimination? I hope Mo'Nique wrecks some havoc. Babylon is burning. Enjoy the show.

Have you considered the possibility that you’re just not that good?

Maybe, just maybe... she’s just not that funny. Let’s get used to unjust lawsuits. Who’s going to want to hire us when NPR has labeled all white people and everything as racist.

They’re going to settle because they don’t want discovery to get out.

DillardVicki FIRST OF ALL DON'T COME FOR MONIQUE! At the time she was offered that ridiculous amount, Monique was in top of HER game! For you to even suggest she wasn't funny, is a testament that you don't know anything about Comedy! POINT. BLANK. PERIOD!

I'm sorry that this irrelevant wannabe star has made this a race and gender issue when it all about how nobody remembers anything she has ever done

How can it be based on race when Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle got big money and are 2 of the specials she’s citing?

Who is she?

'a fraction of the tens of millions of dollars Netflix paid for specials from other comedians including Amy Schumer, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.' I've heard of those 3, don't know her. Gee, could that also be part of the reason for lower offer 🙄

DillardVicki Black people stop watching this garbage

I'm a black man. This lady isn't funny at all. I think Netflix was overpaying by a country mile. The only reason she was even considered to be on Netflix is coz she is black....my take!

There's an awful lot of users in these comments disparaging Mo'Nique's comedy in comparison to Chappelle and Schumer. It's seriously doubtful they, unlike the judge, considered an entire group of people consisting of black women with Netflix accounts who may want to hear Mo'Nique

The lawsuit is a joke. Best one she’s ever told. 🤣

Toilet...meet future career

Maybe they thought that the quality of her routine was only with that.... how much did they pay Chappell? I mean come on

Anyone this unfunny, should be cool with an ok check, and residuals. Is that still a thing? And those on Netflix should be sent out by minutes watched. I can get 10 minutes into a routine and realize it's not gonna be funny. Should only get paid for the shitty minutes I watched

Who?

Who's this?

Imagine complaining on getting offered 500,000 dollars. So much oppression...also what’s her resume look like compared to the others she’s comparing herself to? I’m guessing not as good, hence the diff in price. But hey shout racism..easier than becoming better at your craft.

Unpopular opinion... but how do you get offered half a million dollars for something and still sue the person who offered it?

lmao last I checked she's blacklisted by everyone including Black Hollywood. I recall her beefing w/ Lee Daniels and Steve Harvey just to name a few. I think no one is willing to go to bat for her lol

Breaking news!!!! She’s not funny. Obnoxious, yes. Funny? No!

She isn’t on their level...the people she compares herself to are just worth more...she isn’t funny and we’d rather see another Madea movie...same humor, done better.

She has a fucking Oscar. Good for her.

Maybe she just isn’t that funny

Of course they blacklisted her. She thinks she's at the same level as Chappelle. Clipped the article for you lazy fuckers.

What media genius decided to use the phrase 'blacklisted' in tweeting about the African American comedian Mo'Nique?

Which male peers is she talking about, Chappelle, Louie, angry Boston guy? She is not in the same league content wise.

She needs to get rid of her husband as her manager he reminds me of Tom Arnold and Roseann

First mistake was offering to pay her in the first place. She should be paying Netflix for the exposure. She isn’t funny, and certainly not $500,000 funny!

Just another day for your average American multi billion dollar company

Fighting for your rights is golden. It is a way to contribute to society. Enough is enough. Black people have lost too much money over the centuries. The slaves never got paid for all of their labor. This is unimaginable.

This lawsuit is hilarious, the Mo’lady not so much!

Yes. You go girl!!!!!

Good luck and go! Solid argument.

America's only protection lies in re-electing President Trump. Democrat mayors coddle criminals leaving we Taxpayers exposed to violent mobs. This isn't a game democrats are playing. Lives matter, our lives. We have a right to defend our loved ones and ourselves and we will.

NetflixIsAJoke obviously does not appreciate the 'talent' of Mo'Nique. How dare they pay unfunny joke-thief Amy Schumer $13M and disrespect Mo'nique with a measly $500K offer. The world is unfair!

Never heard of her.

Mo'Who?
