“We’ve given over six figures of money directly to Black trans people, directly into their hands…That’s really how you show up materially for people, not being paternalistic, not telling them how to use their money, but letting them tell you what they need in order to survive...”

Armon adds that high unemployment rates due to Covid-19 have also made For the Gworls more necessary than ever.

The increase in support for the Black Lives Matter movement over the last few weeks—and specifically the Black Trans Lives Matter movement—has led For the Gworls to gain an additional 30,000 followers across social media. With that, says Armon, has come an influx of donations as well.“I know the media. I’ve been an organizer for six or seven years. I know you get a lot of attention for a short amount of time, then it dwindles.

“I think the narrative before was kind of like, here are people who are facing these specific types of challenges, and they almost made it like we were helpless, and now the narrative is shifting to, here’s how you should show up to support. Here’s how things need to be fixed and now is the time to fix them. Now will people take heed to that? Who knows.”
