BREAKING: Donald Trump bans police from using chokeholds in wake of George Floyd’s death

has announced a ban on police officers using chokeholds on suspects in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The President of the United States unveiled the move while signing an executive order on police reform outside the White House Tuesday, and said choke holds could now only be used if a cop’s life is at risk.

The president was referring to a newly-unveiled independent certification system the US government will offer individual police departments, that will see them independently assessed by outside auditors in a bid to crack down on brutality and boost public safety.Trump explained: ‘ prioritize federal grants from the Department of Justice to police departments that seek independent credentialing certifying that they meet the highest standards on the use of force and de-escalation training.

He made the announcement after speaking with the families of murdered African-Americans including jogger Ahmaud Arbery, and Botham Jean, who was killed in his Dallas apartment in September 2018 after off-duty cop Amber Guyger mistook his home for hers.
