At least one Irish woman a day travels to the UK for an abortion two years after the Eighth Amendment was repealed.A total of 375 women and girls from the Republic of Ireland travelled to UK clinics during 2019, despite the fact that abortion services became available in Ireland in January of that year.

A further 1,014 women and girls travelled from Northern Ireland, where abortion was only just decriminalised, to England or Wales for care. But advocates yesterday said these latest figures show that Ireland is still failing women when it comes to accessing services. “We should be proud of the way abortion care has been integrated into mainstream healthcare in Ireland.
