series, which follows aspiring filmmakers in post-second world war Hollywood, Harrier plays Camille, an actor who dreams of starring in a major motion picture. Instead, she is given walk-on parts as maids and told that the presence of a black female lead would always constitute a “message picture for coloured folks, with limited distribution”. But, an opportunity arises when her boyfriend, Raymond , begins casting for a new project.
“Dorothy Dandridge was my main source of inspiration. She and Camille aren’t the same person, but their lives mirror each other. I watched as many of Dorothy’s films and interviews as I could and researched her life. She was so talented and charismatic on screen — she should have been the biggest movie star in the world. It made me very sad, the more I learned about her, because her life ended tragically [with her sudden death, reportedly from an embolism at 42].
“The male aspect of #MeToo hasn’t been talked about as much, but it features prominently throughout all of Hollywood history. There are so many people who were really hurt and taken advantage of. I didn’t know the extent of it until I was doing the research for this project. It shows that everyone is vulnerable and that we have to work to change the culture together.”
