Jeremy Pope is having an unusually good lockdown.

Over the last few weeks, the 27-year-old has gone from an up-and-coming Broadway baby to a full-blown TV sensation thanks to a starring role in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix hit,. The show – this month’s buzziest – reimagines 1940s Los Angeles with tangible opportunities for women, people of colour and the LGBTQ+ community. Pope leads the cast as a gay character named Archie Coleman, who exposes Old Hollywood’s seedy underbelly when he attempts to get a script produced by a major studio.

Pope wasn’t a connoisseur of Old Hollywood films before the show, but he has since fallen in love with the 1958 picture, a rare ’50s drama starring black leads in the form of Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis Jr. However, many African-American actors of the period, from Stepin Fetchit to Hattie McDaniel, were often forced to take on derogatory supporting roles. “They paved the way for me to be able to play a wholehearted black, gay character,” Pope says appreciatively of their work.

Meanwhile, the quadruple threat has also got plans to drop an album, after releasing his single “New Love” in 2018. It almost seems unfair, I point out, for Pope to have a hand in everything from drama to TV, fashion to music – and be just as talented in every arena. “Young Jeremy didn’t think he could dream this big,” he says. And now? “We’re just going to run with it.
