Some states are allowing movie theaters to reopen, but will they? The big chains say no. Many local, independent theaters also say no. But some are finding ways to get creative — including putting together pop-up drive-in theaters.

None of the three major national theater chains — AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark — have plans to reopen before June. Above, signs are posted in front of the AMC in Montebello, Calif., on March 17, 2020.Frederic J. Brown/AFP via Getty Images

With the cost of staff and cooling over the summer, it might actually be more cost-effective to stay closed until we can reopen properly."Reopening might actually require a substantial amount of investment on the part of theaters," says Alison Kozberg, managing director ofa non-profit that works with about 200 independent theaters nationwide.

But as weeks stretched to months and his costs mounted, he got bigger ideas: A"100% contact-free" pop-up drive-in behind the theater, say, with tickets scanned through auto windows, and sound broadcast over what he told me with an almost audible wink was,"one of the coolest ways to listen to anything: radio."

No money in movies unless it's a sold out crowd.

What movies are they going to show? Nothing is being released

What are they playing? Andromeda Strain? Contagion? Outbreak? Night of the living dead?

DRYBINZ EVERYONE HELLO BRING BACK DRYBINZ

When a large business like a movie chain says it isn’t safe to socially congregate (at the detriment to their own business), then people really need to consider not congregating.... They aren’t making that up.

So Walmart is cool to go in by the Rona hangs out in movie theatres, nail salons, and any small business. Got it.

the sinema coronaviral

Who wants to watch any more movies?

Go ahead. I’m not going for quite awhile.

Some states are run by people who ignore the escalating death count. Open for business: theaters, bars, and funeral parlor$

Just stay tf at home, people. Watch a movie there.

Our drive-in is reopening Friday. Cars have to be parked 10 ft apart don’t know how that’ll look

Drive-in could actually work, that's a good idea

I’d go to a drive-in

Yay drive-in resurrection!

1st you gotta find a theater NOT owned by China. Good luck

This industry is toast.

I suspect drive-in cinemas will become popular once more.
