Devi is a typical American teenager in that she goes to school and aims for popularity, all while trying to get stellar grades and participate in as many extracurriculars that will impress the Princeton admissions committee as possible. Yet, while she navigates the inevitable high school situations like parties and a Model UN summit, we also see periodicfrom Devi’s father. We see flashes of the ambulance that took him away, and the orchestra concert where his death occurred.
It’s a strange consequence of grief that we continue to “see” our dead loved ones. Rationally, you know that this can’t be real — but emotionally, you want it to be. For me, this mostly happened in crowds when I would walk around in downtown Chicago, spotting my father here and there. But for Devi, shewith a coyote that she thought was her father reincarnated.
