The success of his film My Beautiful Laundrette gave Kureishi the impetus to extend a short story - resulting in a modern classic

All first novels are letters to one’s parents, telling them how it was for you, an account of things they didn’t understand or didn’t want to hear.

One of my favorite books. I had a book clean out last year and gave that book to my bank manager, who is from Pakistan but never heard of Kureishi.

I am drawn to his works... he captures relationships so well, raises important power dynamics in different contexts: race, class, gender, sexuality, education, status. Raw yet so delicate. He has amischevious nature too! Currently reading, ‘The last word’ Hanifkureishi
