, studios for liberally amending longstanding policies. In the past, exhibitors have vocally opposed films playing exclusively in theaters for less than 90 days.
It’s possible that “Trolls World Tour” could be the impetus for a new theatrical model, but industry experts suggest the decision is more likely a unique response to the rare circumstances. For Universal, it’s the chance to offer a film, one that might not have been a theatrical juggernaut, to a captive audience stuck at home.
More recently, some follow-ups to cartoon films geared toward younger audiences haven’t performed to the same level as their predecessors. Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” Warner Bros. second “Lego Movie” and Sony’s “Angry Birds 2” each brought in almost 50% less at the box office than the originals. Financially, it might not have made sense for Universal to continue to pump marketing dollars into a film like “Trolls World Tour” given this kind of trajectory for animated sequels.
“Trolls World Tour,” which could benefit from brand recognition among younger audiences, will be available to rent for 48 hours for $19.99. Universal hopes audiences will consider that price tag a bargain, since tickets in urban markets such as New York and Los Angeles can hit nearly $20. And that’s not including the cost of popcorn and soda.
Knock knock. Who's there? Universal likes money.
It actually skipped EVERY theater. Get your facts straight.
I’d much rather pay $20 to watch a new movie release at home with my 3 kids than spend $65 on tickets and snacks at the movie theater
Screw those greedy movie theaters.

Twenty dollars for a 48 hour hire is expensive.
This movie was not worth the $20 nice move to release out of kindness then charge people
If a family of 4 was going to the theatre it would be $40 before any concessions. $20 at home is a bargain and the movies theatre model is in trouble
Good. We need people back in cinema auditoriums when they are allowed to reopen.
I tried ordering and got yelled at 'twenty dollars!!'.. So yeah. We aren't streaming it.
Lets not use Trolls World Tour as an example of the direction of film thanks
I’d rather pay to stay at home and watch cinema. I have a 10 foot projector, can eat, blaze during the film, pause to use restroom, and don’t have to deal with parents with loud kids arriving 10minutes late. Cinema theaters were created when there were zero screens at home!
Well AMCTheatres is going to be bankrupt in about a month. It could be a shift to streaming. Trolls was not good. Luckily it only cost me $20 and not $60+ to find out the same results
I’m so pissed I spent $20 on this. It was AWFUL. Cringeworthy. My kids even thought it sucked.
People still want to get out of the house and see a movie on the big screen!
The shift needs to happen. It’s insane paying for those high ticket prices, risk being shot at etc...Hollywood needs new movie ideas and stop with the re-works .
I really hope there will be a shift! The future is streaming!
paradigm shift.
MariefHull Hmmm I thought about this video when I saw this
I think everyone is just going to start Pirating again and who can blame them, if we're going to end up with 20 different streaming service bills it's no different than the suck that is Cabel tv.
Watched it with my daughters today, they liked it.
