Amid rising fears of the spread of coronavirus in America and overseas—as well as concerns over how those fears affect the box office—many blockbuster releases have been pushed back.which was supposed to be released in April, became the first major release to be delayed; it will now debut in November. support shutting down movie theaters to prevent the possible spreading of coronavirus, according to a Morning Consult and Hollywood Reporter poll. In China and Italy, theaters are already shut down, which has caused a decline in local box offices. For China, the hope for 2020 was to exceed last year’s box office high of $9.2 billion. As of the first 20 days of January—theaters closed on January 21—box office totals were at $3.9 billion, up 157% over last year.
In America, though, the box office has not yet taken a hit. The weekend of March 6 saw box office returns up 4% from the past weekend to $103.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to Comscore. But as companies send employees home and
