Grassroots music venues in the U.K. are to benefit from new cost-cutting measures introduced in the British government's annual budget on Wednesday .
That means that large numbers of small-capacity live music venues in the U.K. will not pay any business rates for the year ahead. The radical measures also apply to night clubs, theaters and bars, providing a much-needed tax break for businesses that will be severely affected should customers stay away because of coronavirus.
Since then, a number of measures and law changes have been introduced to better protect the sector, but the small margins that many venue owners operate under mean that large numbers still remain at risk. Also announced in the chancellor's budget statement was £500 million to extend 4G mobile coverage to 95% of the U.K. and a £90 million annual"Arts Premium" fund for schools to invest in arts activities, starting in September 2021.
