The actor and feminist activist gets candid about her upcoming role as feminist Sally Alexander in MisbehaviourUK.

Keira Knightley has never had any problem speaking candidly about either her acting career or her personal life. Take her recent comments during her promo tour for, in which the 34 year old plays feminist Sally Alexander. The real-life activist famously stormed the Royal Albert Hall during the 1970 Miss World pageant with a gang of other members of the Women’s Liberation Movement, protesting its underlying chauvinism with toy guns and flour bombs.

It’s the sort of refreshing candour that has made Knightley a feminist activist in her own right over the last few years – particularly when it comes to acknowledging the sometimes difficult realities of being a mother. She famously wrote a brutally honest account of her daughter’s birth, titled “The Weaker Sex”, in the 2018 anthology. “Birth, yes.

“It doesn’t judge,” Knightley says of the film, which is notably written, directed and produced by an all-female team of creatives. “It doesn’t tell you what to think. It’s dealing with feminism, and intersectional privilege and racism. It felt very current, and yet it was 50 years ago.” Expect it to spark a wealth of much-needed debate when it hits cinemas on 13 March. All products are independently selected by our editors.
