An excerpt from Andy Greene’s new book ‘The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s’ delves into one of the show’s key behind-the-scenes debates

Copyright © 2020 by Andy Greene.I pitched the idea of, “What if Queen Latifah becomes the manager?” Slowly, one by one, she starts firing all the employees. And you just bring in all these black comedians. It becomes a black office, and you’d just go from there. But, you know, that didn’t get that much traction. It would have been fun though.

I remember a lot of discussion about what we should do. I did not think it should be Andy. I loved the character of Andy. I loved Ed. I don’t think I could see yet what Andy would bring to the table that felt distinct with him being the boss. He’s such a people pleaser, but Michael is a people pleaser. I think people would have been more excited to see Dwight as the boss because he’d been wanting it for so long. It just seemed like it suggested more stories to me.

He’s like this weird amalgam of Mennonite and nerd.

sepinwall Andy was one of the worst sitcom characters ever.

Why Steve Carrell it's out of the book? He's too cool now? It seems that he doesn't like to be part of the show

sepinwall I so often find these oral histories played out, but this one is kind of fascinating. Almost everyone involved thought it should be Dwight, but then Ed had The Hangover so Andy got it, and guess what -- the show suffered for it! Immensely!

sepinwall For me it made Dwight’s final ascension so much sweeter and “right” - everything felt *perfect* at the end, partially due to the investment of the time into Andy as boss. Looking back now - if that was a consideration, hats off. (Hats off regardless who am I kidding)

Overrated

I love Dwight, but if he had been made manager it would have ruined the dynamic between him and Jim. Dwight already owns the building. Making him manager would have spelled game-over for Jim's pranking. J&D need to be at the same level for it to work.

The same reason Velma rarely gets to drive the Mystery Machine... because they’re not the ones you’d most medium suspect.

Andy -- the most annoying character on television, ever!

Bond film 'No Time to Die' moves release date as coronavirus hurts global box officeEven James Bond can't beat the coronavirus. The 'No Time to Die' U.S. release date has been postponed until Thanksgiving weekend to avoid an ailing box office. This is ridiculous. So what, we should just stop society for 6 months? No going to work, baseball season should be cancelled? No Summer Festivals?
