. Director Bong Joon-ho had an incredible night as the South Korean film swept the board, winning best screenplay, best director, best picture and best international film. And it's the first time a film which isn’t in the English language has won best picture, making it a history making night for the team.
When the comedy-thriller won best picture, the lights went down halfway through the speech, but outrage rang out in the auditorium, and they forced the lights back up for more speeches.
Accepting best foreign language film at the Golden Globes, the filmmaker used his acceptance speech to remind people that you can watch a lot more incredible cinema if you can ‘overcome’ subtitles. ‘Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,’ said Bong Joon-ho, who used a translator to deliver his acceptance speech mostly in Korean.
