This time, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling out the star for the feathered cape she wore during part of her performance Sunday at Super Bowl LIV in Miami. The upscale design house arranged the colored feathers to form an American flag on one side and a flag of Puerto Rico on the other. Lopez is of Puerto Rican descent. She wore the piece as her daughter, Emme, sang a portion of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.
But PETA’s problem with the garment had nothing to do with the design or its meaning. The animal advocacy group noted that “This flag could have flown without killing birds.” They used the message to caption a split photo that showed both J.Lo performing in her designer cape and factory workers examining featherless bird carcasses.Dozens of birds were KILLED for this #SuperBowl #PepsiHalfTime performance. #SuperBowlLIV pic.twitter.
— PETA February 3, 2020 Mariel Haenn, one of the main stylists who worked on Lopez’s look, revealed that there were 40,000 feathers involved, in all, each sewn in individually.However, a couple of hours after PETA slammed the cape, the team behind the official Versace Instagram account noted, “All feathers used for the flag were sourced in an ethical way.”
This is far from the first time PETA has taken issue with J.Lo’s wardrobe. The last time was in September, when her movie Hustlers was released. The organization announced it had sent a faux-fur vest to Lopez to replace the fur coat her character wore in the film. Over the years, Lopez has been called out for her personal wardrobe choices and for using fur in her clothing line.
She’s totally unconcious! Often wearing fur and feathers. Irresponsible!

PETA has become militant zealots about animals when it comes to others, meanwhile they run kill shelters and purge feral cat populations. They’re hypocrites.
Birds are not always killed for their feathers. I've used them for years in costumes, and it's easy to source sustainably harvested feathers. Sheep and llamas are not killed for their fleeces, after all.
