Amy Bock is one of New Zealand's most famous scammers but her story is unexpectedly entwined with Australian art history.

Alfred began producing photographic portraits in 1848 and Knights said there is a daguerreotype by Alfred, held at Launceston's Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, that appears to be the basis of his 1858 self-portrait.

This loss, their financial issues as well as the humiliation of Alfred's public disputes with other commercial photographers over patents and licensing for photography techniques, led to the deterioration of Mary Anne's mental health.
