Weinstein’s defense rests largely on impugning his accusers’ credibility; the movie producer maintains that any sexual contact was consensual.
Sciorra’s testimony was dramatic. But I wouldn’t call it theatrical. Except, perhaps, in the way that anything a celebrity does feels a little bit theatrical to onlookers. The public’s fascination with famous people has been an integral—and sometimes awkward—factor in #MeToo’s rise. “When it’s A-list actors alleging crimes of violence by a powerful Hollywood figure, that is going to get attention,” feminist lawyertold me in a recent interview. “So I’m glad that they decided to speak out, because there are also others who were then encouraged to do so.” Allred represents Haleyi and Sciorra.
The first days of testimony at Weinstein’s trial were sometimes focused on show business, to an extent that was, at times, bizarre.
