Breaks my heart.”But the website, founded in 2005, has a track record of being quickest to grisly celebrity deaths.Other famous scoops included Mel Gibson’s drunk-driving arrest and anti-Semitic tirade, and Chris Brown’s physical assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna.
“TMZ effectively — when it comes to entertainment news that is headline-breaking, like the Kobe story — they run this town,” said Hollywood entertainment journalist and producer Simon Thompson. “They have people everywhere.”The outlet is also known for paying tipsters, often generous fees reaching thousands of dollars, in what a New Yorker profile called a “merciless approach to celebrity news.”
