I keep squinting at the official statement from Buckingham Palace that sent Canada into a royal-watching frenzy this weekend. Has anything so lightweight, so gaseous, ever caused the release of so much energy? Stupid question, I suppose: gases explode all the time.
This, combined with the Sussexes’ agreement not to “use” their titles as Royal Highnesses, is basically meant to be read as an assurance that Harry isn’t going to move to Thailand and become a coke dealer or anything. The couple are still a prince and princess of the United Kingdom, and still a duke and duchess, and will still be Royal Highnesses in a latent way, keeping their place in the table of precedence.
So what has really changed, since even their lifestyle of friendly handshaking and ribbon-cutting at charity events seems sure to continue as before? Mr. and Mrs. Sussex have seceded from the famous “rota” of core royal duties whereby they appear specifically as representatives of the Queen and/or the monarchy. In exchange they have given up their share of the Sovereign Grant, which, as everybody now knows, did not make up very much of their income anyway.
They imagine that the press can’t possibly get worse, but while Harry declares how conscious he is of his late mother’s predicament, one can’t help noticing that she died of misadventure after departing the bosom of the Royal Family, pursuing privacy and self-actualization without the family’s mastery of small details like seat belts and chauffeur training.
That will be their undoing. He wants no publicity. She likes publicity but wants to be able to control everything that is written. The catch is that to make money they are going to have to court publicity, and without it they will be unsuccessful.
