The music retailer and the department store chain have announced they are closing at least 22 shops between them.

HMV said in a statement that some of its shops were no longer viable due to"extortionate" business rates in certain locations.

The company said it was also relocating in Lincoln and Plymouth, with new stores opening in both cities at the start of February. "The closures are no reflection on our superb staff and where we are not able to come to a new agreement or relocate staff within the business elsewhere, unfortunately this does mean some of our staff will lose their jobs."The 10 stores subject to negotiations are in the Birmingham Bullring, Leeds Headrow, Bristol Cribbs, Edinburgh Ocean Terminal, Glasgow Braehead, Grimsby, Merryhill, Reading, Sheffield Meadowhall and Worcester.

HMV was purchased in a rescue deal by music mogul Doug Putman in February 2019 after it crashed into administration for the second time in five years in December 2018.

Ffs. I love hmv too.

I miss HMV here, it closed years ago,

They’ve been in trouble a while now. Hardly the latest 🙄

Cue an avalanche of digital shrugs and 'nothing to do with me, guv'...😀

What's going to be on the high street in 2020 nothing, parking is to expensive and shop rents are to high. Shops have had it to good ripping the customer off as they have an instore price and then a cheap internet price they've killed them selves.

HMV needs to be laid to rest as does Debenhams in all fairness. Retail behemoths from the 90s and 00s that don’t worry in the 20s

Essentially rent and business rates are killing the bricks and mortar shops while simultaneously giving online shops a big advantage. The whole thing needs rethinking to create a level playing field

Huh Thought HMV were gone years ago 😟

I swear hmvtweets died like 6years ago.feel like the only Hmv I know of is the flagship in London! All the others have been CUT !!

The high street is an outdated concept & companies like Amazon have helped to finish it off with the online shopping experience being far far better than mucking about in a shop surrounded by people who are getting in each others way with miserable sales assistants

Hmv should get subsidies like farmers do. Where do kids get music that isn't fake trending from? If u don't know the name u don't see it on Spotify etc. art music new

It’s not the retailers fault.. it’s the landlords
