Known as the godfather of Iranian rap, Hichkas symbolises a long tradition of protest songs, with his latest number perhaps strongest ever heard Opinion | Massoumehtorfeh

And they say there are no prisons.Hichkas is not alone in writing protest songs but he’s certainly the most fearless in his criticism. He doesn’t mince his words nor does he oscillate between right and wrong. Contemporary songs have been the voice of major protest marches which seem to have happened every ten years in 1999, 2009, and now 2019.

Many of these songs carry the same theme of unity which Hichkas stresses: “We are all together,” perhaps because that is what is in fact lacking in the opposition real-politic.. “Separately, we will never heal this common pain,” he said.in the 2009 protests. Rap singers are the new standard-bearers of what began in the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 with poets like Mirzadeh Eshghi and Aref Ghazvini. Their satirical verse condemned the dictatorship of the time, if perhaps in a softer tone.
