"This felt more like an an art house musical," says one box office analyst in commenting on the clawless performance of the $100 million movie.was initially labeled a box office slob when posting a first-weekend gross of $8.8 million. The following weekend, as kids and their parents began discovering the Hugh Jackman musical, the Fox pic saw a 76 percent uptick on its way to grossing $174.3 million domestically and $435 million globally.
"It doesn't feel like a family title despite the PG rating. This feels more like an art house musical," says box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. Over the Dec. 27-29 weekend, younger kids represented 21 percent of the combined demos turning out to see, according to Comscore's and Screen Engine's exit polling service PostTrak. That compared to a whopping 41 percent for, an under-the-radar animated pic from Fox/Disney that debuted Christmas Day and posted a five-day debut of $22.1 million., which opened at Thanksgiving, also remained a big draw with the younger crowd. The animated Disney sequel grossed $16.
The maelstrom continued when Universal sent an updated version to thousands of theaters with "improved visual effects" several days after
Even the best musicals on Broadway don’t translate well to the big screen. Sorry I didn’t get LaLa land either.
A basket of kittens drove past the cinema... and flew out of Catwick Airport!
No one wanted to waste their money after the reviews killed the movie before it opened.
Cats is the worst kind of cinematic oddity, horrific to look at AND boring.
For those who have seen it, do you think it will become a wacky cult classic like so many other bombed movies have?
it was just utter bunk. the cgi, story, acting... the list can go on. but Jennifer Hudson and Judi drench playing those 2 roles were sorry horrible.
The movie 'came out like a wrecking ball'. Oops, that's Miley, not Taylor Swift.
They should have had some marketing tie-ins, like a 'Cats' special edition of Kitty Litter.
It was not a good movie.
Content
The trailer made it feel like a horrible movie. That CGI was creepy
Taylor Swift happened
The trailers made me not want to watch it.
Eeerrmm, it was shit. Simple.
It was pants.
It bombed.
Flopped
Because The Greatest Showman wasn’t a creepy, nonsensical, inexplicable, horror/scifi hybrid?
I recently listened to a few of the songs from the musical (I saw it originally when I was very young) and couldn’t believe how bad the songs were. Cringe-worthy. And the trailer just looked weird. Even my kids thought it looked too creepy to see.
It should’ve been one of those “live” network specials. Like Peter Pan or The Sound of Music.
This is terribly written entertainment journalism. It’s statistics of age groups and dollar amounts. Then you take a quote from a “box office analyst” (I want to know more about that job) likening the movie to art house. Zero attempt at saying why cats didn’t have “success”
Saw it on stage twice in the 80s, thought the movie was really great. Can’t understand it’s flop?
Fixed headline: Cats fails as a film compared to other musicals because it's awful.
Cause it's shit. As is its Director 😤
I'm pulling my hair out with the way you all keep comparing Cats to other movie musicals or making it seem like Hooper somehow screwed up the adaption. It's a bad musical. It was always bad. It baffles me that it was a thing in the 80s. That's it. End of story.
