Organisers of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks say the $6.5 million show is going ahead – despite calls for it to be cancelled.

The City of Sydney has been under pressure to scrap the event as the state experiences one of the most devastating fire seasons on record, with calls for the funding to be allocated to the

firefighting effort. But organisers have said much of the budget has already been spent and cancelling the event would unfair impact upon local businesses relying on the income the event provides.

It's ironic, Sydney already shrouded in smoke, toxic air quality - so what's the best thing to do - add more with fireworks. Crazy people!

6.5 million, wonder how many volunteers that would compensate who have been without income for weeks, oh well, rich liberal donors want their light show so let them fly 😂😂😂

I wouldn’t worry as much whether the NY fireworks are going ahead or not as I understand the irony of it while the country’s been burning for months but it’ll be sad to start a new decade without it as celebrations

Who wants to celebrate with fireworks when our loved ones, livestock and wildlife and homes are dead, dying, destroyed or still under catastrophic fire threat. It's hard to feel festive when you're grieving the destruction of everything you love. Cancel the fireworks GladysB

I feel Sorry For All The People In NSW Who Will Miss Out On Celebrating NYES 😫But My Heart Goes Out To All The Firefighters And People Who Lost Everything Hope The Find Some Positive Outbreak 💘

The Gov can pull $50m out of their backside for overseas aid, yet only offer loans here or token amounts.

That amount of money could buy new equipment for the rural fire service especially new clothing.

I could only assume that the contractor would have already been paid, being 3 days out....fireworks and bush fires have nothing to do with each other. PC Police stand down.
