Lewis spends time on his property doing conservation—cleaning up the woods, restoring habitats for native wildlife, and fishing in nearby streams. Those activities are also things he can do alone, which is how he prefers to be when his hearing is at its worst. He can still pick up sounds thanks to hearing aids and other devices that amplify audio, and sometimes his deafness recedes significantly. But music, he said, is already gone.
The band used to average about 75 shows a year, but now Lewis can’t do any. Even if he is well enough to sing, he can’t plan on it. “If I book a gig, I have to book it a month in advance. And I don’t know what’s going to happen a month from now. So that’s the hard part,” he said.
