But on Saturday afternoon, in full view of a throng of Art Basel attendees, Datuna strolled up to the work, removed the taped banana from the wall and casually ate it."It's art performance," Datuna said, grinning impishly as he nibbled on the fruit. "We respect Maurizio, but it's art performance.""Are you kidding? Did you really do that?" the woman asked.Loading"See you after jail, guys," he said as guards steered him through the crowd.
Lucien Terras, director of museum relations for Galerie Perrotin, said Datuna's act didn't devalue the work or detract from its overall integrity. Yes, the original banana is now making its way through Datuna's digestive tract, but the work comes with a certificate of authenticity, and that's what collectors are really paying for."This has brought a lot of tension and attention to the booth, and we're not into spectacles, but the response has been great.
In 2017, he spelled out US President Donald Trump's name in a giant ice sculpture to protest against Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
I would go as low as $50,000 for my piece
arrest the artist and anyone who buys it - no grant involved I hope
Reminds me to thank ScoMo for getting rid of the Arts portfolio. 👏👏👏
If you want to see art better than that, go to any pre school.
Cocaine was once God's way of saying you had more money than brains.
Did the artist give some/all of that ridiculous amount of money to the probably poor, overworked and stressed farmer that harvested the banana for his dumb-arse, throw away (eat away) art piece? Whomever paid for it should take a look at where their $ could be better used
The banana on the wall got paid more than my annual salary....that hurts...
Was it though?
Remember the ‘after the party’ installation the cleaners cleaned up as it looked like a pile of rubbish to them. Which is what it was.
That’s not art but classic example on how the rich play game of creating value out of things of little value ... like Bitcoin, Tulips & junk bonds.
The banana was free; the money is in the duct tape
too funny
It's not art it's a banana. If that's the best the artist can do he/she/it needs a job.
The cost of it was the free marketing that ther artist got. Art, modern art and etc is an investment. Nobody will be able to resell it. So probably was a juicy deal from the artist to the 'collector' for free marketing in newspapers all around the world. Smart person.
Money laundering à la 'Mickey Blue Eyes'...
$175,000 for it? Seriously? It's not worth a cent over $150,000. Someone got duped out of $25k 🙄
120K - 150K for a banana on the wall
Fashion ... for people with no style? Trends ... for people with no imagination? Labels ... for people who like boxes? Brands ... for people who don't have their own identity? Money ... for people who don't know what's worth valuing?
